Where to Watch the World Cup in New York

The 2010 World Cup kicks off at 10 AM EST on Friday, June 11, with host country South Africa playing Mexico. And of course, restaurants and bars across NYC (and the world) are pulling out all the stops for this month-long international showdown. So, in honor of the 31 days the tournament lasts, we’re letting you in on 31 different deals offered all over town.

Bill’s Bar & Burger: This hamburger haven in the Meatpacking District opens 30 minutes before all the early morning games with a special breakfast menu with items like a burger with a fried egg on top and boneless chicken wings. In honor of the Cup’s host city, the menu also features boerewors (pronounced “boo-ruh-vors”) – a traditional South African sporting event treat of beef sausage in a bun served with chutney and caramelized onions (212-414-3003).

Boqueria: Enjoy classic tapas dishes while cheering on Spain at both the Flatiron and SoHo locations, which open early at 9:30 AM on game days. Arrive before noon and order from the special menu with tortillas Española, bocata manchego, bacon-wrapped dates and more. And, during the first week’s 10 AM games, you can get free churros and chocolate or bravas and beer (212-255-4160 and 212-343-4225).

Brick Lane Curry House: Celebrate England at this East Village Indian with $8 cocktails like Black and Tans, Snake Bites and Irish Car Bombs during games. There will also be a FIFA-inspired menu including masala chicken lollipops, Kingfisher fish fingers and onion bhajis, with $22 combo platters for groups of six or more (212-979-2900).

Cabrito: This West Village Mexican is opening early at 10 AM for the June 11 kickoff game and serving a special Mexican breakfast. As for the rest of the games, happy-hour drink pricing is offered during all matches and everyone gets free shots whenever the U.S. scores a goal in any of its games (212-929-5050).

Dos Caminos: The SoHo location of this Mexican mini-chain opens 30 minutes before all the early morning games with a special menu offered through lunch that includes smoked chicken nachos, breakfast torta and open-faced quesadillas with smoked beef brisket and scrambled eggs (212-277-4300).

Double Crown: Fuel up starting at 9:30 AM from a full menu with specials like chicken wings and fish ’n’ chips, as well as a DIY Bloody Mary bar and mojito pitchers at this NoHo Eclectic-International (212-254-0350).

East Village Tavern: With a breakfast menu including $5 breakfast burritos and paninis, this neighborhood bar is opening at 7 AM for games (212-253-8400).

Esperanto: Catch all the 9:30 AM and 2 PM games (and every Brazil game) at this East Village Nuevo Latino. Expect complimentary shots of cachaça whenever Brazil scores, $1-off beer during games and half-time shirt raffles (212-505-6559).

Exchange Bar & Grill: This stock market–themed bar in Gramercy is taking reservations for viewing parties of five or more that includes breakfast or lunch and three drinks for $15 per person person – an extra $5 per person wins you a free shot every time your team scores (646-596-9039).

Fatty Crab: Head over to the UWS location of this Malaysian for happy-hour food and drink specials at the bar for the duration of any game aired within normal business hours (212-496-2722).

Hecho en Dumbo: This NoHo Mexican is serving up drink specials like $3 Tecates. Don’t forget to claim your team at the bar for a hand stamp that can get you free shots of tequila for every goal your team scores (212-937-4245).

Hill Country: Bring your friends to this Flatiron ‘cue joint for group specials like “The Veteran,” which serves four and includes a jumbo bucket of wings, smothered nachos, sausages, chili mac n’ cheese and smoked meat sliders for $45. Grab six people for the $95 “All-Star” special, which is the same as “The Veteran,” plus an extra jumbo bucket of wings and guacamole with chips (212-255-4544).

Macao Trading Co.: Doors open at 7:30 AM and games are shown on a 10×10 movie screen at this Chinese-Portuguese in TriBeCa. Check out the FIFA special – a sandwich with beer, coffee or juice for $10, on top of $5 beer and $6 sandwich specials (212-431-8750).

Mason Dixon: This LES saloon is offering all-you-can-drink wristbands for $40 during games, 25¢ wings after 1 PM, $1-off domestic beers and $2-off well drinks. Make sure to wear your participating country’s uniform and get two-for-one drinks for the duration of the game. See more info here (212-260-4100).

Mercadito: The original East Village location is showing all games on its 52-in. TV screens and offering an all-you-can-eat taco deal for $25 during game coverage (212-529-6590).

Nios: This New American in Time Square’s Muse hotel is serving a special international mash-up menu that includes Kobe beef sliders with a Negra Modelo beer ($15), chorizo pizza with Harpoon beer ($15),  fish n’ chips with Kronenbourg beer ($12), carbonara poutine with Brahma beer ($14) and plantain chips with Peroni beer ($9). And, as a tribute to the host nation, you can order homemade ostrich biltong jerky with South African Castle beer for $12 (212-485-2999).

Ofrenda: Gather at this West Village Mexican for complimentary bar snacks with a drink purchase during all games. Happy hour starts at 10 AM with wine, sangria, Bloody Marys, margaritas and mimosas for $5 each and Mexican beers for $4.50. If Mexico wins, everyone gets a free round of beer and well drinks (212-924-2305).

Paradou: For the duration of the Cup, this French bistro in the Meatpacking District will offer various three-course prix fixe menu devoted to Australia, Africa, Asia, The Americas and Europe. The $35 menus are available Sundays–Wednesdays; check them out here (212-463-8345).

The Parlour: The Garment District offshoot of the original UWS Irish pub will show live screenings of all matches, during which domestic pints cost $4. And, due to Ireland’s shutout this year from the controversial 2009 play-offs against France, viewers get free shots whenever any team scores against France (212-967-1070).

Plein Sud: Frederick Lesort, owner of this French brasserie in TriBeCa and an actual member of a soccer league, has organized viewing parties in the downstairs lounge from 7 AM–5 PM (212-204-5555).

Rare Bar & Grill: Munch on all-you-can-eat “freckles” (fried pickles) and down $5 pints of draft beer during any USA game at the Chelsea location in the Fashion 26 Hotel (212-807-7273).

SD26: This Murray Hill Italian is serving free pizza during Italy’s games (212-265-5959).

Silver Leaf Tavern: Order the African Sunset, a special vodka cocktail, and receive a complimentary appetizer at this hotel lounge in the 70 Park Avenue Hotel (212-973-2550).

Smith’s Bar: Get $5 local pints during games and happy-hour prices if you wear a participating team jersey at this Times Square sports bar (212-246-3268).

The Sunburnt Calf: A this UWS restaurant and bar, expect $2 Buds and giveaways. The Sunburnt Cow, its sister location in the East Village, will only show the Australia games (646-823-9555 and 212-529-0005).

SushiSamba: Cheer on Brazil at both the Flatiron and West Village locations of this Brazilian-sushi fusioner, where you can order food specials like Kobe beef sliders with mustard miso ($6) and a special World Cup Roll ($12). Enjoy $7 cocktail specials like The Forward (with Maker’s Mark and apple cider) and The Keeper (with sparkling wine and mango and guava juice). Look for live drummers during every Brazil game, samba dancers and giveaways. You can also expect caipirinha pitchers and sorbet (212-475-9377 and 212-691-7885).

Tartinery: This NoLita French will air games on both floors and offer a special two-for-one deal on cocktails, beer and rosé during live games (212-300-5838).

Trattoria Cinque: This TriBeCa Italian opens every game day at 10 AM with cappuccinos and bombolones (cream puffs) for $5 until 11:30 AM, $5 calzones from noon–4:30 PM and $5 aperitivos from 5–8 PM. As for drink deals, themed cocktails go for $10 and, if Italy wins, expect $1 Peronis and $5 Campari cocktails (212-965-0555).

Virgil’s: Get complimentary hush puppies at the bar during all 2:30 PM games at this Times Square barbeque spot (212-921-9494).

Wildwood Barbeque: This Flatiron barbeque locale opens 30 minutes before the early morning games with a special breakfast menu including chicken and waffles, wings and a smokehouse breakfast (212-533-2500).

Woodwork: This Prospect Heights soccer bar will be taking reservations for weekend games (all except the USA ones, which are already sold-out) for a $25 cover charge that includes two drinks and a commemorative T-shirt. Weekday games are open seating and will be replayed later in the afternoon. There’s also a special menu featuring ethnic sandwiches for each participating team (718-857-5777).
