September 1st marked the eagerly awaited opening of The James New York hotel in Soho, a Big Apple branch of the popular Chicago hotel The James.

Located on Grand Street at Thompson Street, the James New York has 114 guestrooms and suites, as well as a lobby and common spaces designed to be as eco-friendly as they are stylish. There’s a lot of glass, including a sleek elevator and a two-story glass wall in the lobby offering views of the tri-level urban garden. A rooftop deck, featuring a pool with spa cabanas for the warmer months and a bar with a speakeasy vibe, is scheduled to open October 1st; the bar will reportedly be operated by David Rabin (formerly of Lotus) and the partners behind Hotel Griffou. The restaurant at the James opens in November, under the rumored stewardship of star chef David Burke.

In addition to its kid- and pet-friendly policies (according to Gadling, canine guests will be outfitted with dog beds and bowls courtesy of Soho pet store Doggystyle), the James New York will no doubt win raves for the original works of art on display, chosen by the hotel’s own art curator, Matthew Jensen, who worked with the New York non-profit Artists Space to showcase works by emerging local artists.
