Enjoying The Big Apple

16 August 2011 One Comment

The city of New York is an icon of American life and offers an exciting and inspiring holiday destination. From its recognisable skyline to its world famous streets the city offers something for everyone and never, ever disappoints.

Planning a New York Holiday

While the Big Apple, as it is affectionately known, makes a great break all on its own, one of the best ways to experience this city is as the culmination of a visit to another area of the USA, when its influence and impact on and culture and contrast with the rest of the nation can become clear.

Consider making a trip to New York the culmination of an exciting cross country trip by taking advantage of cheap flights from Europe and one of the great car hire deals on offer, or alternatively make it the final destination on a coast to coast tour by coach or rail – each of which will provide an exciting perspective on the vast US nation.

What to do in New York

Whatever your style or taste you will find attractions in New York to suit your style. Some suggestions of opportunities not to be missed while in the city include:

The Empire State Building: This iconic piece of architecture has become synonymous with the city itself and no one should visit New York without taking the time to travel tot he top and enjoy the amazing views over the city.

Central Park: situated in the centre of Manhattan, Central Park offers a great break from the hustle and bustle of city life. Pack a picnic and explore, take a carriage ride by night or hire a bicycle to get about – whatever your choice of transport, the delights of Central Park are just waiting to be discovered.

Broadway: You can’t visit New York without taking a trip to what is arguably the world’s most famous theatre district. Whether you decide to take in an award winning show, or simply want to say you saw the lights – Broadway is a must see on any Big Apple trip.

Statue of Liberty: Standing sentinel over the city in Upper New York Bay on Liberty Island is the Statue of Liberty. Accessible only by ferry, this symbol of the “Land of the Free” is amazing up close, although those who hope to climb up into her crown will need to book well in advance as only 240 people per day can be accommodated on the special staircase ascent.

The Guggenheim: If you only intend to take in one galley during your stay in New York, the Guggenheim has is all – from impressive architecture to amazing exhibits, including masterpieces by Van Gogh, Picasso and Kandinsky. A great opportunity to indulge your inner culture vulture.

All of the above mentioned places are worth visiting. And if you are visiting, I would highly suggest consulting City Maps. It’s a wonderful tool and a one stop shop for anything from booking a NYC Hotel to finding the happy hour specials on Houston st. Its interactive and shows the city block by block. I highly recommend.
